“Canadian Researchers Develop Ice-Resistant Floating Solar System”

Western University researcher Koami Soulemane Hayibo and his team devised a floating solar system to combat ice formation by utilizing cost-effective plastic foam instead of traditional metal racks. By suspending bubblers beneath the panels to keep the water moving and prevent ice buildup, the system maintained efficiency even in cold conditions.

Despite the bubblers consuming some of the electricity generated, the floating solar panels proved to be cost-effective, generating electricity at around three cents per kilowatt-hour. The researchers are now exploring further optimizations, such as reducing snow buildup and microplastic shedding, to enhance the system’s efficiency.

The technology holds promise for various applications, from repurposing former mining sites to reservoirs, offering a sustainable energy solution with minimal environmental impact. The potential scalability of this innovation opens up possibilities for broader implementation in diverse settings, including residential pools and unused ponds.

The novel approach by Hayibo and his colleagues has garnered interest from experts like Ibrahim Dincer, who sees its potential for powering ferries and providing local electricity to remote communities. The success of this innovative solution hinges on its commercial viability and scalability.

As the global community continues to seek sustainable energy solutions, the adaptation of floating solar technology presents a promising avenue for leveraging renewable energy sources and mitigating environmental impact.
