“Canadian Officials Rally Behind Ford’s Bold Anti-Tariff Strategy”

Published:

Amid a clash between U.S. President Donald Trump and Canada over an Ontario government anti-tariff ad, Canadian politicians at all levels of government are standing behind Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s strategy and are refraining from labeling the ad as a misstep.

Brampton, Ontario Mayor Patrick Brown voiced his support for the premier’s actions on a recent episode of Rosemary Barton Live, stating that sometimes unconventional approaches are necessary to garner attention. Brown commended Ford for addressing inconsistencies and showing courage in confronting the U.S. president.

The ad by Ontario references former U.S. President Ronald Reagan’s statements to convey an anti-tariff message to American audiences. Trump reacted strongly to the ad, leading to a halt in trade negotiations with Canada and a threat to increase tariffs by 10%.

Despite Trump labeling the ad as deceptive and alleging Canadian influence on an upcoming U.S. Supreme Court case, various Canadian officials have commended Ford’s bold stance. British Columbia’s Forests Minister Ravi Parmar praised the effectiveness of Ontario’s ad in raising awareness and indicated plans for their own anti-tariff campaign soon.

Prince Edward Island Premier Rob Lantz acknowledged Ford’s impactful messaging but respected his decision to withdraw the ad, emphasizing the need to move forward positively. Liberal House leader Steven MacKinnon lauded Ford’s patriotism and unity with Team Canada.

Ford announced the withdrawal of the ad after its airing during the World Series game, achieving its goal of sparking dialogue on economic matters and tariff impacts. The next steps for Canada involve resuming talks with the U.S. and addressing Trump’s tariff threats.

Former deputy chief of staff Brian Clow suggested leveraging the ad’s removal as a positive gesture towards Trump. Meanwhile, Frank McKenna, a former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., speculated that Trump’s actions could be a tactic to disrupt potential trade deals.

As Canada seeks to diversify trade partnerships and reduce reliance on the U.S., efforts are underway to strengthen ties with other nations. Carney’s actions are seen as crucial in urging the U.S. to recognize the significance of Canadian trade. Brown emphasized the importance of exploring alternative avenues if trade talks with the U.S. remain unproductive.
