Canadian Cyclist Derek Gee Seeks $48.6M in Contract Termination

Published:

Canadian cyclist Derek Gee is potentially looking at over $48.6 million in damages as he seeks to terminate his contract with the Israel-Premier Tech team. Despite the financial risk, Gee is resolute in his decision to part ways with the team, citing an inability to continue racing for them.

In a social media statement, the 28-year-old from Ottawa expressed his reasons for contract termination, pointing to conflicts with the team principal and significant concerns regarding his safety and personal beliefs while racing for the squad. Israel-Premier Tech responded briefly, mentioning that the matter is currently under review by the UCI Arbitral Board.

The Israel-Premier Tech team has faced recent challenges, including protests and security issues at races in Italy. Amid these difficulties, the team has announced plans to rebrand and distance itself from its Israeli identity. Additionally, Canadian-Israeli co-owner Sylvan Adams will shift his focus to his role as president of the World Jewish Congress.

Gee’s lawyers initiated the termination process, claiming just cause for his actions, while the team insists that his contract remains valid. The dispute is now in the hands of legal representatives and the UCI for resolution.

The Israel-Premier Tech team, formerly known as the Cycling Academy team, boasts strong Canadian connections, with riders like Michael Woods, Hugo Houle, and others. Steve Bauer, the first Canadian to win a Tour de France stage, serves as the team’s sporting manager. Premier Tech, the team’s title sponsor, is headquartered in Quebec, further solidifying the Canadian ties within the team.

Gee, who was promoted from the team’s academy to the WorldTour squad in May 2022, faces a complex legal battle as he stands by his decision to terminate his contract with Israel-Premier Tech.
