“Canada’s Energy Minister Stresses BC Support for Alberta Pipeline”

Published:

Canada’s energy minister emphasizes the importance of gaining support from British Columbia to move forward with Alberta’s proposed pipeline project to the West Coast. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith recently announced plans for a bitumen pipeline extending across northern British Columbia to the Pacific Ocean.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson highlighted the necessity of securing backing from B.C. and impacted Indigenous communities for the project’s development. Hodgson stated during a Senate appearance that for construction to proceed, the Alberta government must garner support from the jurisdiction and First Nations along the proposed route.

Smith intends to submit a formal application to the federal Major Projects Office (MPO) in the spring of 2026, anticipating private sector involvement post-clearance. However, B.C. Premier David Eby has expressed skepticism towards a new pipeline traversing his province, citing risks to community approval for future coastal projects.

Hodgson mentioned Ottawa’s willingness to facilitate discussions between Alberta and B.C. while noting the early stage of the pipeline proposal. He emphasized that Alberta has preparatory work to complete before a formal submission, labeling the current status as hypothetical.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has engaged with Premier Smith multiple times in recent months, with Smith optimistic about Ottawa addressing Albertan concerns. The pipeline initiative is framed by Smith as a pivotal test for Canadian unity.

The Major Projects Office (MPO), initiated by Carney’s government to expedite national projects, anticipates a potential approval timeline of several months for Alberta’s proposal assessment. Dawn Farrell, MPO’s CEO, mentioned the review process could last four to five months upon submission, aiming for efficiency.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the timeline, urging immediate approval to attract private investment for the pipeline construction. Poilievre emphasized that swift government action would catalyze significant private sector funding for the project.
