Over the course of almost 50 years of Blue Jays baseball, the team has reached the playoffs 11 times, including the current season.
This upcoming Sunday marks the start of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) for the Blue Jays, a stage they last entered in 2016. They will face the Seattle Mariners, who eliminated the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.
To advance to the ALCS, the Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series (ALDS).
Prior to this year, the Blue Jays have made it to the ALCS on seven previous occasions, including 1985, 1989, from 1991 to 1993, and then again in 2015 and 2016.
Let’s take a look back at how the team fared during those previous ALCS appearances.
The Debut in 1985
In 1985, the Blue Jays won 99 games during the regular season, a record that has yet to be matched by the team. They were among the top teams in scoring that year and had six players with double-digit home run tallies. The current Blue Jays also ranked fourth in runs scored in the 2025 regular season, with several players hitting 20 or more home runs.
Back in 1985, the playoffs were shorter, and the Blue Jays advanced directly to the ALCS, where they faced the Kansas City Royals. Despite a seven-game series, it was the Royals who emerged victorious and went on to win the World Series.
1989: 89 Wins
In 1989, the Blue Jays secured 89 wins and captured the division title. This win total was slightly lower than their current season’s finish.
Facing the Oakland Athletics in the ALCS, the Blue Jays managed to win only one game in the series. The A’s went on to sweep the San Francisco Giants in the World Series.
1991: 91 Wins
Two years later, with a 91-win season, the Blue Jays clinched another division title. However, they stumbled in the ALCS, winning just one game against the Minnesota Twins, who eventually became the World Series champions.
Back-to-Back Champions
