The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport has placed Cricket Canada on suspension from the Canadian Safe Sport Program due to non-compliance with participant e-learning and consent requirements. This action was announced by the CCES in a statement released on Wednesday.
Taking over the responsibility for safe sport in Canada from the now-closed Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner on April 1, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport is now in charge of managing and investigating complaints and reports of abuse and maltreatment in sport. Since then, the CCES has been collaborating with Cricket Canada to implement the Canadian Safe Sport Program, which mandates participants to complete a 40-minute e-learning module and sign a consent form to understand their rights and responsibilities under the program.
The CCES emphasized that Cricket Canada has not yet met these essential requirements and has notified both Cricket Canada and Sport Canada about the situation. Without fulfilling these foundational obligations, the CCES may not be able to handle safe sport reports involving individuals from these organizations, as these requirements are designed to safeguard all participants and emphasize the sport community’s collective duty in upholding safe sport standards.
As a result of the suspension, cricket players no longer have access to CCES reporting mechanisms or protections and are advised to contact Cricket Canada for alternative options. If Cricket Canada fulfills its outstanding obligations, the CCES stated that it would reinstate the national sport organization in the Canadian Safe Sport Program and make this information publicly available.
