Environment Canada reported a mere 0.4 millimetres of precipitation for the month, the driest September in Calgary since 1885. Weather expert Kyle Brittain highlighted the unusual lack of rainfall, with only 6.6 millimetres recorded since early August.
In contrast, July was notably wet, ranking as the third wettest July on record with 168 millimetres of rainfall. The month experienced extreme weather events, including a costly hailstorm causing significant damages estimated at $164 million.
Despite the weather fluctuations, attendance at Calgary attractions remained strong throughout the summer. The Calgary Stampede and Calaway Park reported positive outcomes, with increased sales attributed to a rise in staycations influenced by economic factors and global tensions.
Harvest results for crops varied, with some farmers benefiting from the early season rains. Johnson Fresh Farms and farmer Stephen Vandervalk expressed gratitude for the precipitation, aiding in crop yields. Vandervalk particularly noted the positive impact of late rains on canola production.
Looking ahead, meteorologist Brittain predicts a potential La Niña formation, suggesting colder temperatures and increased snowfall for the upcoming winter season in Calgary.
