Three exceptional individuals, namely Laurie Brinklow, Kirstin Lund, and Ian Petrie, were recently honored with the prestigious Order of P.E.I. award at a ceremony held at Government House in Charlottetown. The award, first established in 1996 as the Medal of Merit, acknowledges Islanders who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in their community or profession.
Dr. Laurie Brinklow, a prominent figure in Prince Edward Island’s literary scene for over four decades, was recognized for her contributions to the Island’s cultural landscape through her work at the Institute of Island Studies at UPEI. Brinklow has been instrumental in advancing literary arts and publishing on the island, playing key roles at Ragweed Press and founding The Acorn Press.
Kirstin Lund, a lawyer turned conflict resolution expert, was also honored for her advocacy for women’s rights and gender equality. Lund has been actively involved in promoting the role of women in provincial politics and reducing family violence. She is known for her work in gender inclusion in sports and her contributions to safety planning processes for individuals at risk of intimate partner violence.
Ian Petrie, a retired CBC News reporter, was recognized for his outstanding journalism career and his insightful commentary on agricultural issues in Prince Edward Island. Petrie emphasized the importance of trustworthy journalism in today’s media landscape and continues to contribute to the field through writing and teaching.
The honorees expressed gratitude for the recognition and highlighted their ongoing commitment to serving their communities. Laurie Brinklow, Kirstin Lund, and Ian Petrie have each made significant contributions to the cultural, social, and environmental fabric of Prince Edward Island, embodying the spirit of the Order of P.E.I. award.
