Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Malaysia on Saturday to explore trade opportunities within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The focus now shifts to whether he will have a chance to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, who is also scheduled to attend the same event on Sunday.
Trump abruptly halted trade discussions with Canada following his disapproval of an Ontario government advertisement in the U.S. featuring pro-free trade statements by former President Ronald Reagan. Describing the ad as “FAKE,” Trump declared the termination of all trade negotiations with Canada. In response, Ontario Premier Doug Ford suspended the ad in hopes of resuming negotiations.
Before departing Ottawa for Kuala Lumpur, Carney downplayed Trump’s reaction, emphasizing positive progress in sectors like steel, aluminum, and energy. Expressing readiness to resume discussions when the U.S. is willing, Carney highlighted the benefits for both American and Canadian workers.
Although it remains uncertain whether Carney will have the opportunity to discuss trade matters with Trump in Malaysia, Trump has stated that he has no plans to meet with Carney. Referring to the ad as “possibly AI,” Trump criticized Ontario’s decision to pull the ad as “dirty playing” and warned of potential retaliation.
A senior federal official disclosed that bilateral talks with key ASEAN countries are currently scheduled, with a primary focus on finalizing the Canada-ASEAN free trade agreement for signing next year. The official emphasized the strategic importance of engaging with the rapidly growing economies in the ASEAN region to enhance trade access for Canadian exporters and strengthen partnerships.
Carney has emphasized the importance of identifying avenues for economic growth for Canadian businesses. While expectations for significant achievements at ASEAN negotiations are tempered, given the complexities arising from varying levels of economic development and regulatory frameworks among ASEAN members, Canada is gearing up for incremental progress in trade discussions.
