The provincial legislator representing Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, has finally spoken out after being ousted from Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservative government due to criminal charges. Chris Scott, aged 35, released a statement acknowledging the allegations of assault and assault with a weapon on September 19. He mentioned retaining legal representation and expressed trust in the judicial system while refraining from further comment on the charges during ongoing court proceedings.
In his statement, Scott requested privacy for his family, particularly his children, throughout the legal process. Despite becoming an Independent member in parliament, he assured constituents that his office would continue to serve them, albeit with reduced involvement in partisan and non-essential public activities. Scott emphasized his dedication to serving the people of Sault Ste. Marie, calling it a significant honor.
Despite facing calls for resignation from various quarters, including Mayor Matthew Shoemaker and other local figures, Scott highlighted the support he has received from constituents and community leaders. He expressed gratitude for the backing received, stating that it meant a lot to him and his team. Scott, a former member of Ford’s team, secured victory in the February provincial election in northern Ontario, prevailing over New Democrat candidate Lisa Vezeau-Allen by a slim margin of 114 votes.
The next court appearance for Scott is scheduled for October 22 in Sault Ste. Marie, following his removal from the premier’s caucus on September 22 without a specified reason. When questioned about Scott’s departure during a separate press briefing, Ford redirected inquiries to law enforcement, refraining from commenting further to avoid any interference in the police investigation. Confirming the charges, the Sault Ste. Marie courthouse had earlier disclosed the legal proceedings against Scott.
