The district attorney’s office explained that this plea offer is standard for individuals without prior DUI offenses, no accidents or injuries, and low blood alcohol levels. It is typical for defendants who demonstrate a willingness to address their issues, as seen when Spears voluntarily entered a substance abuse treatment facility in April.
Goldstein expressed relief at resolving the matter swiftly, acknowledging that while no one is pleased about pleading guilty, it was necessary to move forward. He commended Spears for her proactive approach to self-improvement. Goldstein clarified that Spears completed her rehabilitation program and dismissed rumors of an early departure. Regarding her future plans, he stated uncertainty but anticipated significant developments.
During the hearing, Spears received informal probation, waiving her Fourth Amendment rights during potential traffic stops. The judge exempted her residence from this provision at Goldstein’s request. District Attorney Erik Nasarenko underscored Spears’ acceptance of responsibility, emphasizing the seriousness of DUI offenses. Following her arrest on March 4 for erratic driving, Spears’ camp acknowledged the gravity of her actions and hoped for positive change. Spears and her representatives refrained from commenting after the charges were filed.
Allegedly driving recklessly in her black BMW on U.S. 101, Spears was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol. Subsequent field sobriety tests led to her arrest.
