The RCMP’s renowned horse breeding program is famous for producing the black Hanoverians that showcase their skills in the iconic Musical Ride. However, not every foal meets the required standards.
Horse enthusiasts now have the chance to acquire a piece of Canadian history as the RCMP stables kick off their sixth annual horse auction through the Government of Canada’s online auction platform, GCSurplus. Sixteen horses are available for bidding, starting at $5,000. Additionally, over 70 doses of horse semen for artificial insemination breeding are up for auction.
Sgt. Sarah Parent, a Musical Ride instructor, described the horses as well-bred and personable. The Musical Ride, featuring mounted officers performing intricate cavalry drills set to music, has been a significant part of Canadian culture since its inception in 1901.
The RCMP has maintained its equestrian legacy through the Musical Ride, which has been based in Ottawa’s Rockcliffe Park since 1960. The breeding program, established in 1939, focuses on Hanoverians known for their calm demeanor, size, shape, and solid black coat.
Not all horses bred at the RCMP farm in Pakenham, Ont., meet the performance standards for the Musical Ride. However, these horses excel in various other equestrian disciplines due to their exceptional temperament, athleticism, and prestigious lineage.
Among the horses up for sale is Vimy, a confident and brave young filly, and Bravo, a stallion with remarkable movement potential. Legal, an 11-year-old mare, is no longer suited for the Musical Ride due to previous surgeries but remains an affectionate and intelligent horse with jumping prowess.
The auction will run for two days on Oct. 7 and 8, featuring horses and frozen breeding doses from sires Earl, High Spirits, and Morricone III. Proceeds from the auction will be reinvested back into the RCMP’s horse breeding program.
