Entertainment Industry Giants Oppose Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger

Published:

A group of over a thousand prominent figures in the entertainment industry, including actors, writers, and directors, have expressed strong opposition to the proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. In an open letter released on Monday, notable individuals such as Denis Villeneuve, Kristen Stewart, J.J. Abrams, and Joaquin Phoenix voiced their concerns about the $111-billion US deal, which aims to combine the two renowned studios into a single entity. They fear that the merger could result in reduced job opportunities, fewer movies being produced, increased costs, and limited choices for audiences worldwide.

The agreement between David Ellison’s Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery, announced in late February, is awaiting approval from shareholders and government regulators. Paramount’s successful bid for the merger, following negotiations and a competing offer from Netflix, is set to reshape the landscape of the film industry. Despite the assurance from Paramount that the merger will create more opportunities for content creators, critics within the industry believe it may lead to substantial job cuts and an accumulation of power in the hands of a few.

This merger is the latest in a series of significant consolidations in Hollywood, with the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by The Walt Disney Co. in 2019 being another notable example. Paramount Skydance’s CEO, David Ellison, has committed to maintaining Paramount and Warner Bros. as distinct studio operations and plans to release a combined total of 30 films annually. However, the merger is also expected to result in significant workforce reductions due to overlapping functions.

In response to the concerns raised in the open letter, Paramount has defended the merger, asserting that it will offer creators more opportunities to showcase their work on a global scale. The studio believes that the combined strengths of the two entities will enable them to support talent at various stages of their careers and bring diverse stories to audiences worldwide. Nevertheless, critics argue that the merger may have detrimental effects on job security and diversity within the industry.

The open letter, organized by a coalition of advocacy groups including the Committee for the First Amendment, the Democracy Defenders Fund, and the Future Film Coalition, has garnered support from a wide range of industry professionals, including Ben Stiller, Don Cheadle, Javier Bardem, and others. Damon Lindelof, a signatory and a prominent figure in the industry, expressed his concerns about the potential consequences of the merger on job opportunities and artistic freedom in a social media post.

While Warner Bros. representatives have not yet responded to requests for comment on the letter, the debate surrounding the merger continues to intensify within the entertainment community.
