“Fredericton Faces Fentanyl Crisis: Surge in Overdoses”

Published:

Fredericton authorities have issued a public warning following a surge in drug overdoses within the city. Police reported responding to 33 overdose-related incidents in September, with 13 occurring within a single day last week. This year, officers have already attended to 113 drug overdose calls requiring medical assistance, surpassing the total of 109 calls in the entirety of 2024. Tragically, there have been six fatal overdoses recorded so far.

Insp. David Cooper of the Fredericton police shared with CBC News that responding to overdose calls has sadly become a daily routine for their officers, indicating a concerning shift in the city’s drug landscape. Cooper noted that a significant portion of overdoses are affecting the most vulnerable members of the community, with individuals citing drug use as a means to escape their harsh realities.

Authorities in Fredericton are cautioning the public about a rise in the utilization of fentanyl, a potent opioid that may be mixed with other dangerous substances. The presence of these unknown substances poses difficulties for law enforcement when administering naloxone, a medication used to counteract opioid effects. Individuals using drugs are strongly advised to recognize the heightened risks and seek assistance if necessary. Additionally, friends and family of at-risk individuals are encouraged to engage with local health services for guidance and support.

Cooper emphasized that individuals should not hesitate to contact the police in the event of an overdose or when encountering an unresponsive person. He assured the public that the primary objective in such situations is to prioritize the individual’s health and safety, rather than pursuing criminal charges.
