“From Homeless to Hopeful: Woman Overcomes Adversity”

Published:

Helliena Snell faced uncertainty when she found herself homeless on the streets of London, wrapped in a blanket and filled with fear and anxiety about her future. Despite her best efforts to find a safe spot downtown, she struggled with the fear of the unknown and prayed for shelter and dry weather.

After being evicted eight years ago, Snell couldn’t afford housing with her ODSP payments, leading her to spend nights on the streets before seeking refuge at a motel and eventually a local shelter. The shelter life was challenging, with theft, the need to secure belongings, and exposure to drug use by other residents.

Despite temptations, Snell abstained from drugs and sought support from a chaplain during her vulnerable moments. With the help of a shelter staff member, she applied for subsidized housing and endured a four-year wait before finally receiving a unit offer.

Upon securing her new home, Snell was overwhelmed with joy and gratitude, shedding tears of relief that her homelessness journey had come to an end. Friends came to her aid, providing furniture and essentials for her one-bedroom apartment. She now feels safer, sleeps better, and believes in encouraging others that there is always a way out of difficult situations.

Snell’s story aligns with data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, highlighting the correlation between evictions and homelessness. While her successful housing placement is uplifting, property manager Chris Payne acknowledges the persistent housing shortage in London and the need for more affordable units to support families in need.
