In Ottawa’s Montfort Hospital, the Mental Health Emergency Zone has been a game-changer for patients seeking mental health care in crisis situations. The ER waiting room, typically loud and chaotic, was a major trigger for distressed patients, leading to harmful behaviors. However, the newly established Mental Health Emergency Zone, designed specifically for de-escalation, has shown significant positive outcomes for both patients and staff.
Dr. Kristine Levesque, the hospital’s deputy chief of staff and chief of psychiatry, highlighted the high pressure in the ER waiting rooms due to the influx of patients. In contrast, the Mental Health Emergency Zone offers a serene environment with calming elements such as soft music, adjustable lighting, comfortable seating, and essential amenities like a shower and cellphone charging station. The presence of a psychiatric nurse around the clock ensures immediate assessments and support for patients.
Montfort Hospital’s Mental Health Emergency Zone was inaugurated in November 2024 to cater to the substantial number of mental health emergency cases the hospital receives, which surpasses the provincial average. Situated in an area with above-average poverty and addiction rates, the hospital often treats patients dealing with substance use and mental health challenges.
The initiative to establish the Mental Health Emergency Zone was prompted by a series of alarming incidents, including a patient suicide in the ER and an attempted assault on a psychiatrist. The zone is equipped with safety features such as automatic door closures, anti-ligature hooks, and surveillance cameras to ensure patient well-being and prevent self-harm incidents.
Funded through a successful $2-million campaign by the Montfort hospital foundation, the Mental Health Emergency Zone has not only improved patient care but also enhanced the work environment for staff. Violent incidents involving staff have significantly decreased since the zone’s inception, showcasing the positive impact of targeted mental health care facilities within hospitals.
The success of the Montfort Mental Health Emergency Zone underscores the importance of tailored approaches in addressing mental health crises in healthcare settings. Initiatives like this serve as a model for promoting trauma-informed mental health care practices nationwide, emphasizing the need for standardized mental health crisis interventions and resources across all healthcare facilities.
