“Iqaluit Emergency Alert Ends After 14-Hour Standoff”

Published:

An emergency alert lasting nearly 14 hours in Iqaluit, triggered by reports of gunshots, has come to a conclusion. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) initially issued a citywide shelter-in-place advisory early on Saturday, only to later announce the conclusion of their operation at around 4:30 p.m.

Residents were informed that they could safely leave their homes and resume normal activities as police presence in the area continued for investigative purposes. Prior to the alert being lifted, a man in handcuffs was observed being placed into a police vehicle, visibly agitated as he was driven away.

The sequence of events began when the Nunavut RCMP responded to a report of firearm use on Tasilik Street shortly before 1 a.m. Upon arrival, additional shots were reportedly heard emanating from the residence. Subsequently, a shelter-in-place directive was issued citywide, advising residents to remain indoors, secure their doors, and avoid windows.

A resident of Tasilik Street, who requested anonymity due to safety concerns, revealed hearing intense yelling late Friday night before retiring to bed, only to be awakened by a police confrontation outside. At the scene, a CBC News reporter observed approximately 40 police officers, some in tactical gear and accompanied by police dogs, with drones also deployed at one point.

Around 2:30 p.m., law enforcement entered a residence and escorted two individuals out, followed by three loud bangs reverberating through Tasilik Street. Earlier attempts to communicate with an individual inside the property included the use of a loudspeaker, tossing rocks at windows, offering doughnuts, and deploying a drone over the building.

Throughout the day, the public was advised to steer clear of the 2200s area, encompassing Tasilik Street. Despite this, children were observed playing nearby, and several businesses, such as the Quick Stop on Apex Road, remained operational. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported following the incident.
