The Mulgrave Road Theatre in Guysborough, Nova Scotia, is set to undergo a significant transformation as it prepares to move into a new energy-efficient facility, supported by acclaimed actor and director Ethan Hawke.
Established half a century ago in March 2026, the theatre currently operates from a former NSLC location provided by the municipality. Hawke, a four-time Academy Award nominee, recently visited the new venue, showcasing his interest and investment in the region.
Emmy Alcorn, the theatre’s artistic director, shared that the connection with Hawke stemmed from a mutual acquaintance. Expressing her surprise at the swift response, Alcorn recounted how Hawke visited the site within hours of the invitation and engaged in a comprehensive tour, emphasizing his belief in the significance of professional theatre for community growth.
Grateful for Hawke’s unexpected visit and endorsement of the project, Alcorn mentioned that he already has a reserved seat for the opening night. The upgraded theatre space will feature 75 retractable seats, offering versatility as a community area, alongside an art gallery highlighting local artists. Additional facilities include a technical workshop, dressing rooms, administrative offices, and outdoor gathering spots.
In a show of support for the Mulgrave Road Theatre’s future endeavors, Hawke’s involvement reinforces the importance of cultural development and artistic expression within the community.
