“Heated Rivalry” Stars Condemn Toxic Fan Behavior

Published:

The stars of the show “Heated Rivalry” are speaking out against inappropriate behavior from a segment of their fan base. Hudson Williams and Francois Arnaud, actors on the series portraying characters involved in significant romantic storylines, shared a joint message on their Instagram profiles denouncing any form of hateful or disrespectful remarks.

The message emphasized that individuals who make racist, homophobic, biphobic, misogynistic, ageist, ableist, parasocial, or bigoted comments should not consider themselves true fans. Several other cast members, such as Ksenia Daniela Kharlamova, Robbie G. K., Sophie Nelisse, Harrison Browne, and Christina Chang, reposted the message in solidarity.

Browne, who plays a transgender character on the show, specifically mentioned the issue of transphobic comments and highlighted negative feedback he received regarding his role. The post was also shared by Rachel Reid, the author of the original books, and director Jacob Tierney.

The popular series on Crave has propelled its actors into the limelight but has also attracted a fan base that has exhibited toxic behavior at times. There has been intense speculation surrounding the sexuality of Williams and his co-star Connor Storrie. Storrie has addressed this speculation by emphasizing the importance of representing characters that resonate with fans over his personal life.

Following reports of Williams having a girlfriend, some critics accused him of queerbaiting. However, Williams has not publicly disclosed his sexual orientation. Additionally, he has faced racial slurs and derogatory comments about his appearance from certain individuals.

Recent photos of Storrie and Arnaud together in public sparked assumptions of a romantic relationship between them, leading to unwarranted criticism directed at Arnaud from viewers hoping for a real-life parallel to the show’s storyline. Arnaud expressed in January that dealing with hateful comments from fans prompted him to block certain platforms and refrain from reading comments.

Director Jacob Tierney has voiced concerns about a toxic segment of the fan base that engages in insulting actors or attempting to involve him in controversies. He made it clear that he does not condone such behavior and chooses not to engage with it.

In recent months, other television shows and actors have also confronted negative comments from their fan bases. For instance, those involved in “The Summer I Turned Pretty” urged fans to maintain kindness in conversations, while the reality show “Love Island” reminded viewers to treat contestants as real individuals who should not be subjected to cyberbullying or harassment.
