“Oilers Extend Coach Knoblauch’s Contract Through 2028”

Published:

The Edmonton Oilers have announced the extension of head coach Kris Knoblauch’s contract for an additional three years, ensuring his leadership until the 2028-29 season. Knoblauch, who took over from Jay Woodcroft on November 12, 2023, has overseen the team’s back-to-back appearances in the Stanley Cup finals.

Despite a challenging start to the 2023-24 season with a 3-9-1 record, Edmonton flourished under Knoblauch’s guidance, finishing with an impressive 48-16-5 record before falling to the Florida Panthers in seven games in the final. In the following season, Knoblauch achieved a 48-29-5 record, leading the team to the final once again, where they were defeated by Florida in six games.

Expressing his gratitude, Knoblauch acknowledged the exceptional players and organizational support that have contributed to the team’s success. He emphasized the importance of having a talented and character-driven roster that is dedicated to achieving success.

Looking ahead, Knoblauch is focused on the upcoming season, relieved to have secured his position and able to concentrate on the team’s performance. With star players like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl leading the way, the Oilers aim to continue their pursuit of success in the NHL.

Prior to joining the Oilers, Knoblauch coached the Hartford Wolf Pack, the AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers, and served as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Flyers. His experience coaching McDavid during their time with the Erie Otters in the OHL has further strengthened his coaching credentials. Additionally, Knoblauch’s background includes playing junior hockey for the Edmonton Ice and competing at the University of Alberta for five years.
