Cadaver dogs are set to search for two children who vanished from rural Nova Scotia over four months ago, as the RCMP maintains they have no indication that Lilly and Jack Sullivan are deceased. The siblings, aged 6 and 4, were reported missing on May 2 after their mother contacted authorities, stating they had wandered off from their residence in Lansdowne Station, located in Pictou County.
The search for Lilly and Jack initiated a thorough exploration covering 8.5 square kilometers of dense woodland, involving around 160 ground search and rescue volunteers, service dogs, drones, and helicopters, but cadaver dogs, trained to detect human remains, were not utilized during the initial search efforts.
Recently, the police announced upcoming search operations without specifying the locations or schedules due to safety reasons, confirming that the searches will not occur during the weekend and will focus on the “areas of highest probability.” The decision to deploy cadaver dogs marks a significant advancement in the investigation, according to Cpl. Guillaume Tremblay.
The children’s paternal grandmother, Belynda Gray, expressed relief upon hearing the news of the upcoming cadaver dog searches, emphasizing the slow progress of the investigation and the lack of transparency from the authorities. Daniel Martell, the stepfather of Lilly and Jack, echoed Gray’s sentiments, stating the prolonged wait for answers has been emotionally taxing.
The RCMP will introduce Sgt. Dave Whalen and his dog Kitt, along with Insp. Luke Rettie and his dog Narc, from British Columbia to conduct the searches in the following days and weeks. Human remains detection dogs are highly specialized in detecting the scent of decomposition and can operate effectively even in challenging environments such as landfills.
The decision to bring in cadaver dogs was made following a comprehensive examination of various investigative leads, numerous tips, and thousands of videos. The deployment of these specialized K-9 units signifies a commitment to exploring all avenues in the search for Lilly and Jack Sullivan.
