“Influencers Promoting Unregulated Peptides Raise Health Concerns”

Published:

Crocodile excrement, tapeworms, and raw meat facials were once popular methods used by the elite to maintain their youth and beauty. Nowadays, influencers are promoting injectable peptides as the ultimate solution. However, scientific research does not fully support these claims.

Although insulin and GLP-1s like Ozempic are well-studied injectable peptides used in medicine, the peptides endorsed by influencers lack approval from Health Canada and have not undergone large-scale human trials. These unregulated peptides are often sold through a “grey market” for research purposes but are bought for unauthorized uses. Health Canada has issued warnings against purchasing these drugs online, and the World Anti-Doping Agency has prohibited many of these injectables for professional athletes.

In contrast, the U.S. is considering relaxing FDA regulations on compounding 14 popular peptides by pharmacies. This potential change, as reported by The New York Times, has sparked concerns among scientists and health researchers.

Peptides are amino acids at the molecular level, serving as building blocks for proteins in the body. While naturally occurring peptides play essential roles in bodily functions, synthetic injectable peptides are marketed as muscle-building aids or youth-enhancing products without substantial evidence to support their effectiveness.

The rise of unregulated peptides is attributed to “science-ploitation,” where influencers capitalize on trendy scientific concepts to promote unproven theories. Critics warn that these unregulated drugs, often pushed by certain online communities, could pose health risks as they are manufactured in non-sterile environments.

The lack of regulation also raises concerns about the purity and safety of these peptides, as they may not deliver the promised benefits. Experts caution against using unproven pharmaceuticals without proper scientific validation, emphasizing the importance of established methods like physical activity, a balanced diet, social connections, purposefulness, and quality sleep for overall well-being.
