“Yoga Instructor Paddles 1,300km Around Vancouver Island”

Published:

Paul Verchere, a yoga instructor and former nightclub owner, embarked on a remarkable journey around Vancouver Island after recovering from ankle surgery. Inspired by Terry Fox’s cross-Canada run, Verchere meticulously planned the month-long stand-up paddleboarding adventure over two years. Despite contemplating sponsorship, he ultimately decided to undertake the challenge for personal fulfillment.

Setting off from Ladysmith, B.C., on June 25, Verchere paddled approximately 1,300 kilometers around Vancouver Island in 40 days, often paddling up to 11 hours daily while carrying 40 kilograms of gear. Battling rough waters, strong headwinds, and encounters with wildlife, including breaching whales, Verchere faced numerous challenges along the way.

Making stops in Port Hardy and Tofino for supplies, Verchere spent most nights camping, cooking, and resting. Adapting his route due to unfavorable weather conditions, including 35-knot winds, he navigated through Cape Scott’s challenging conditions before completing his journey back in Ladysmith on August 4 with a sense of accomplishment.

Reflecting on his experience, Verchere expressed relief and pride in his achievement. Despite physical exhaustion post-journey, he remained active, engaging in yoga, hiking, and paddling to recondition his muscles. Contemplating future adventures, Verchere mentioned being enticed by the Northwest Passage as his next dream expedition.
