Vanessa Butler, a resident of Western Bay, experienced the devastating loss of her home during a massive wildfire that swept through Conception Bay North in August. Determined to salvage whatever she could, she watched as volunteers in hazmat suits meticulously combed through the debris under a light rain.
Reflecting on the emotional impact, Butler expressed how her home represented security and comfort, making it difficult to witness its destruction. Having moved to Western Bay seeking tranquility fifteen years ago, she cherished the memories of her peaceful abode by a pond, reminiscent of her childhood visits to her grandparents’ place.
The wildfire on August 3rd forced Butler to evacuate, leaving her anxious about the state of her property. Upon returning, the sight of the ravaged community was overwhelming, with Western Bay being severely affected, losing 86 structures to the flames.
Despite the devastation, Team Rubicon, a group of volunteers led by veterans specializing in disaster relief, joined the efforts to assist residents in salvaging valuables from the ruins. Their mission included locating a special mug adorned with geese wearing aprons, which held sentimental value to Butler.
After a thorough search, the team unearthed the cracked mug near where her kitchen once stood, providing a glimmer of hope amid the destruction. Witnessing the recovery of her cherished possession, Butler expressed profound gratitude, emphasizing the significance of the moment.
Spending her birthday week camping on her property, Butler found solace by the pond, holding her grandfather’s mug, symbolizing resilience and the restoration of cherished memories. The experience was a poignant reminder of hope and the community’s support during challenging times.
