“Wildfire Forces Evacuations in Bugaboo Provincial Park”

Published:

A fire outbreak in Bugaboo Provincial Park in British Columbia’s East Kootenay region has triggered evacuation alerts and closures. The Regional District of East Kootenay issued an evacuation alert for three addresses and surrounding areas, including popular sites like Bugaboo Falls and Bugaboo Septet recreation sites and CMH Lodge.

Earlier, core areas of Bugaboo Provincial Park had been closed due to flooding damage, forcing the evacuation of around 60 campers and hikers. B.C. Parks has now reported that the nearby Silver Basin wildfire is rapidly expanding, leading to anticipations of further park closures.

The wildfire, located southeast of the park, is currently not posing a threat to any structures. The fire is estimated to cover approximately 150 hectares and is believed to have been ignited by lightning at an elevation of 2,000 meters. An area restriction has been enforced to prevent public access and ensure the safety of firefighting operations.

Officials had cautioned about heightened fire risks over the long weekend in British Columbia due to hot, dry conditions and lightning strikes. It is advised that individuals in the backcountry practice fire safety measures, and if campfires are permitted, they should be limited in size. A special air quality statement has been issued due to wildfire smoke affecting sections of the B.C. Interior and northeast regions.

As smoke levels rise, people are urged to minimize outdoor activities and keep windows shut indoors. Additionally, proper air filtration systems are recommended to protect indoor air quality. An evacuation alert was also issued near Tsetzi Lake by the Cariboo Regional District, covering one structure, due to a nearby wildfire.
