“TV Mention Boosts Tourism for Alberta’s Buffalo Jump”

Published:

A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alberta is experiencing increased attention following a mention on a popular American TV show, with hopes of a busy summer season. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump gained exposure on a recent episode of the award-winning medical drama series, “The Pitt,” where a character plans a visit to the site. Located 150 kilometers south of Calgary, the site served as a historical location for Indigenous people to hunt bison by driving them off a cliff. The interpretive center at the site delves into Blackfoot culture, local ecology, and archaeological discoveries, offering visitors a cliff top trail experience.

Quinton Crow Shoe, the marketing lead at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, mentioned that the TV mention sparked interest among visitors, leading to an increase in inquiries and social media engagement. Crow Shoe expressed gratitude for the show’s impact and anticipates a rise in visitation during the peak season from May to September. The site, attracting around 60,000 visitors annually, is part of a network of attractions in southern Alberta, encouraging tourists to explore the region comprehensively.

In addition to the TV show’s promotion, initiatives like the Canada Strong Pass discounts have contributed positively to visitor numbers, according to Crow Shoe. Travel Alberta capitalized on the opportunity by releasing a promotional video featuring the TV show characters set against the backdrop of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. Alberta’s Culture Minister, Tanya Fir, shared the TV clip on social media, highlighting the global interest in Alberta’s history and cultural landmarks.
