In the wake of a severe rainstorm on Thursday night, the southern Manitoba city of Steinbach faced widespread flooding in streets, basements, and businesses. The city was deluged with 103 millimetres of rain in just four hours, reaching a total of 135 mm, equivalent to two months’ worth of rainfall for the area. La Broquerie and Niverville also experienced significant rainfall, with over 100 mm reported in each location.
Local officials and residents described the storm as intense, causing vehicles to become stranded in flooded areas resembling lakes. Steinbach Coun. Bill Hiebert recounted receiving distress calls from residents, including one reporting three feet of water in their basement. The Steinbach and Area Animal Rescue facility was particularly hard hit, with nearly two meters of water inundating the building.
The rescue organization swiftly mobilized efforts to relocate 22 cats and kittens to safety, as the lower level of the building, housing essential supplies and items for an upcoming yard sale, was submerged. Vice-president Graham Pollock expressed concerns about the financial impact, as the nonprofit organization faced a significant insurance deductible of $25,000 for overland flooding.
Meteorologist Chris Stammers explained that the heavy rainfall was a result of a line of thunderstorms that lingered over the region, leading to localized downpours. Steinbach bore the brunt of the storm, with neighboring areas also receiving substantial rainfall. The sudden onset of the deluge, coupled with the already saturated ground, exacerbated the flooding situation.
In response to the flooding, local authorities are evaluating the sewer system’s capacity to manage such rapid and intense rainfall. Despite the challenges, community members are working together to address the aftermath of the storm and support those affected by the flooding. The resilience and preparedness of residents in the face of natural disasters like this recent rainstorm highlight the importance of proactive measures to mitigate future risks.
