Bowen Yang, known for his recent success in various projects, is set to leave his role on Saturday Night Live during the current season following tonight’s episode featuring Ariana Grande. Yang initially joined the show as a writer in 2018, later transitioning to a featured player and eventually becoming part of the main cast two seasons afterward. With five Emmy nominations under his belt, Yang has been a beloved figure among fans.
Neither a representative from SNL nor Yang’s own representatives have provided comments regarding his departure from the long-standing New York City-based show. Yang expressed his sentiments in an Instagram post, stating his appreciation for the experience and the people he worked with during his time at the show, highlighting the importance of perseverance even when things seem challenging.
This mid-season departure from SNL mirrors previous instances, such as Cecily Strong’s exit in December 2022. Ahead of the current season’s commencement on October 4, a significant number of cast members, including Ego Nwodim, Heidi Gardner, Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker, Emil Wakim, and John Higgins, also departed.
Yang, aged 35, was featured alongside Grande and Cher in promos for the upcoming episode, sharing a light-hearted moment with Grande after an interaction with the iconic singer. Notably, Yang had previously discussed the possibility of leaving SNL, mentioning conversations with the show’s creator, Lorne Michaels, in September. Despite considering his options, Yang had chosen to continue at that time.
Apart from his work on Saturday Night Live, Yang co-hosts the popular pop culture podcast Las Culturistas</em with his colleague Matt Rogers. Additionally, he has been involved in productions such as Wicked, Wicked: For Good, and The Wedding Banquet this year. Born in Australia to Chinese immigrants and raised in Canada, Yang holds dual American and Canadian citizenship.
In a recent feature for Esquire, Yang shared his thoughts on his career and personal life, emphasizing that his identity extends beyond being queer and Asian. He highlighted the importance of meaningful connections and experiences outside of work, expressing a desire to maintain a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle.
