“Sinners” Breaks Record with 16 Oscar Nominations

Published:

The 98th Academy Awards nominations were revealed on Thursday, with the film “Sinners” making history by receiving a total of 16 nominations. This surpassed the previous record set by “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land.” The film, recognized for its craftsmanship, saw nominations in various categories including directing, acting (marking Michael B. Jordan’s first Oscar nomination), and best picture, with credit given to Ryan Coogler’s writing and direction, as well as Jordan’s performance.

Additionally, “One Battle After Another” and the Norwegian film “Sentimental Value” also had a strong showing at the nominations, with the latter garnering nine nods, a notable achievement for a non-English language film. This year marks the eighth consecutive year that foreign language films like “One Battle” and “Sentimental Value” compete for the best picture award. Both films are also contenders for the Oscars’ newest category in 25 years: achievement in casting.

Notable nominations included Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for best supporting actress, as well as a variety of films such as “Bugonia,” “F1,” “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “One Battle After Another,” “The Secret Agent,” “Sentimental Value,” “Sinners,” and “Train Dreams” in the best picture category.

While there were few surprises in the nominations, some unexpected entries included the absence of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s “Wicked: For Good” and the nomination of Delroy Lindo from “Sinners” instead of the anticipated nominee, Miles Caton. Additionally, Jesse Plemons and Paul Mescal, who were expected to receive best actor nods, did not make the list. Notably, Apple’s “F1” emerged with four nominations, positioning itself as a potential contender for various awards.

“One Battle After Another” nearly set a record with four acting nominations, falling just short of the five required to match a record set back in 1976. Despite this, the film’s lead, Chase Infiniti, was notably missing from the best actress category, with Kate Hudson securing a nomination for her role in “Song Sung Blue.”

Other films like “Hamnet” and “Marty Supreme” also received significant recognition with eight and nine nominations, respectively. “Hamnet’s” Jessie Buckley is a strong favorite for best actress, having already won at the Critics Choice and Golden Globes. Timothée Chalamet from “Marty Supreme” is in the running for best actor, competing closely with Leonardo DiCaprio from “One Battle After Another.”

The 98th Academy Awards, set to take place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and hosted by Conan O’Brien, are highly anticipated. With Netflix in discussions to acquire Warner Bros., potential changes in the film industry are on the horizon, as evidenced by the studios’ lineup of acclaimed films.
