Sarah McLachlan Prioritizes Daughter’s Graduation Over Ibiza DJ Performance

Published:

Sarah McLachlan prioritized her daughter’s high school graduation over a potential performance in Ibiza with DJ John Summit. Her daughter, aged 18, had suggested the idea with hopes of joining her mother for an unforgettable experience. McLachlan’s vocals feature in Summit’s recent remix of “Silence,” a track originally released in 1999 with the Vancouver electronic duo Delerium. The song has become a staple in the dance music scene, frequently reworked by various electronic producers.

The remix has gained significant traction at summer music festivals, fueled by McLachlan’s distinctive voice and Summit’s reputation as a top DJ. Summit praised the original Delerium version as a “timeless record” and one of his favorites. McLachlan expressed delight at the track’s resurgence, noting even her partner’s children found it cool.

McLachlan’s youngest daughter, Taja, urged her to accept Summit’s invitation to perform “Silence” live during his set, but conflicting schedules, including potential appearances at U.S. music festivals Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits, prevented her from committing. Despite her daughter’s plea to prioritize the Ibiza performance over graduation, McLachlan remained firm.

In addition to juggling family commitments, McLachlan was finalizing her first album in 11 years, titled “Better Broken,” set for release on Sept. 19. She is also involved in “Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery,” a documentary on the influential female-led music festival premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival and on CBC next month.

As “Silence” resonates with a new generation of fans, McLachlan reflects on her past party days, now preferring to dance at home at the age of 57. She appreciates the enduring appeal of the song for its juxtaposition of her pop-folk vocals with dynamic electronic production. McLachlan acknowledges the power of blending different music genres, creating unique and appealing sounds to diverse audiences.

While McLachlan has not confirmed a performance with Summit, she remains open to the idea. She mentioned ongoing discussions but emphasized the uncertainty of future plans.
