Three years into his mission to run every street in Toronto, a local runner was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Despite the diagnosis, he persevered to raise funds for a cause dear to him. On Friday, he accomplished his goal, expressing gratitude for the support that propelled him forward.
Following his terminal glioblastoma diagnosis in May, the runner, Carlo de Lorenzi, was determined to resume running with his doctors’ approval. In 2022, he initiated a fundraiser for the Community Music Schools of Toronto, aiming to donate a dollar for each street he conquered.
Under the banner of “Takin’ it to the Streets,” inspired by a song by The Doobie Brothers, de Lorenzi completed over 10,000 streets and raised over $20,000, surpassing his initial fundraising target. Reflecting on his efforts, he highlighted the personal significance of music lessons in his life, a gift from his parents that he now seeks to pass on to others.
Allison Bone, the vice-president of philanthropy at the music school, praised de Lorenzi’s support, emphasizing the values of perseverance and determination instilled in the children. The donations will contribute to ensuring access to music education for kids, covering class expenses and instrument costs.
Recognizing the mental and physical health benefits of exercise, Catherine Sabiston, a professor at the University of Toronto, commended de Lorenzi’s achievement as a positive outlet during challenging times. She highlighted the importance of setting goals, being outdoors, and finding community support for mental well-being.
Despite facing challenges during his runs, de Lorenzi expressed satisfaction in overcoming obstacles and completing his mission. He ended his final kilometer at the Community Music Schools of Toronto, surrounded by supporters, marking a celebratory conclusion to his remarkable journey.
