Radio-Canada issued an apology following an incident where one of its reporters made antisemitic remarks during a television broadcast. The reporter, Élisa Serret, was reporting from Washington on U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to Israel, which occurred shortly after Israeli forces targeted Hamas in Qatar.
During the broadcast, Serret made comments implying that Jews finance American politics and control key aspects of American society. Radio-Canada denounced her statements as stereotypical, antisemitic, and prejudicial, stating that they do not align with the broadcaster’s standards. As a result, Serret has been relieved of her duties pending further investigation.
The host of the program, Christian Latreille, expressed regret for not intervening during the broadcast and apologized for the incident. The Quebec chapter of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) condemned Radio-Canada for spreading antisemitic falsehoods and called for measures to prevent such language from being aired in Canada.
Canadian officials, including Minister Steven Guilbeault and MP Anthony Housefather, emphasized that antisemitism has no place in Canadian society. They highlighted the harmful impact of such rhetoric and commended Radio-Canada for taking action in response to the incident. Conservative MP Melissa Lantsman criticized the public broadcaster for providing a platform for antisemitic views and called for Serret’s dismissal.
