“Nunavut Assembly Prepares for Final Meeting Ahead of Election”

Published:

Nunavut’s sixth assembly is gearing up for its last meeting before the territorial election, with house leader David Joanasie highlighting the budget and housing as key topics for discussion. The members are set to convene from Sept. 8 to 18 for the fall sitting, which is earlier than the usual late-October session.

The assembly will be dissolved on Sept. 21 in preparation for Nunavut’s seventh election, scheduled to take place no later than Oct. 27. Joanasie emphasized that there are still several bills to address, and he anticipates inquiries regarding public housing following recent hearings where members deliberated on a report by the Auditor General from May.

The report revealed shortcomings in providing equitable access to suitable public housing for Nunavut residents by the Nunavut Housing Corporation, citing a lack of clarity on whether the units were allocated to those in greatest need. “Housing remains a significant and ongoing issue,” noted Joanasie.

During the fall sitting, the assembly traditionally unveils its capital budget. Given the election year, the capital plan will focus on interim spending to support ongoing projects rather than introducing new initiatives. Joanasie underscored the importance of preparing the groundwork for the next assembly and government to succeed.

Additionally, Joanasie mentioned that members will continue to raise concerns brought by their constituents, ensuring that local voices are heard and addressed within the assembly.
