“New Hospital Construction Progresses in Northern Ontario”

Published:

A significant development is underway in the northern region of Ontario as preparations are underway for the construction of a new hospital. Pomerleau, the construction company responsible for building the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority’s new facility in Moosonee, reports that progress is on track nearly a year after being awarded the contract.

According to Denise Angelakos from Pomerleau, over 1,100 steel piles have already been installed, forming the structural foundation for the health campus. Concrete work is ongoing, laying the groundwork for the steel framing phase, which is set to commence soon. Angelakos highlighted the extensive planning involved to address logistical challenges of transporting materials to the James Bay Coast and coping with the region’s harsh winter conditions.

The next phases will involve the erection of structural steel and the continued assembly of pre-fabricated and modular units, which will be transported to the site by train. Angelakos mentioned that equipment and materials will be primarily delivered by train rather than winter roads to facilitate the construction process.

Community members and residents in the area are closely following the project’s progress, eagerly anticipating the improved healthcare facilities it will bring. Angelakos noted the active involvement of community members in providing feedback and shaping the project through engagement and participation plans, creating a shared sense of excitement about the benefits the completed project will offer.

The completion timeline for the Moosonee hospital and a nursing clinic in Moose Factory is set for 2030, promising upgraded healthcare services for the region.
