Midnight Oil Drummer Rob Hirst Passes at 70

Published:

Australian band Midnight Oil announced the passing of their esteemed drummer and co-founding member, Rob Hirst, at the age of 70. The band confirmed the news in a heartfelt Facebook post, expressing that after a valiant three-year battle, Hirst had passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. They also encouraged donations to charities dedicated to pancreatic cancer research and support.

The band’s veteran members, Peter Garrett, Jim Moginie, and Martin Rotsey, shared their profound sorrow over the loss of their bandmate, referring to Hirst as their brother. They emphasized the enduring impact of his contributions, stating that while words may fail them at present, the music they created together will always speak volumes.

Midnight Oil’s musical journey dates back to the early 1970s, with members residing in Sydney and Canberra during their formative years. Their eponymous debut album was released domestically in 1978, followed by several successful albums culminating in the 1987 release of “Diesel and Dust,” which solidified their reputation as a socially conscious band with a global following.

The band’s advocacy for Indigenous rights, notably showcased in their hit “Beds Are Burning” from the “Diesel and Dust” album, propelled them to international acclaim. Their electrifying live performances, characterized by Peter Garrett’s dynamic stage presence and Rob Hirst’s commanding drumming, captivated audiences worldwide.

Despite the challenges posed by the digital age on music sales, Midnight Oil continued to produce albums until 2002 when Peter Garrett transitioned to a political career. The band periodically reunited for tours and recordings, with their latest album “Resist” released in 2022.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and prominent musicians, including Jimmy Barnes and members of INXS and Hoodoo Gurus, paid tribute to Rob Hirst, acknowledging his immense talent and influence in the music industry. Hirst’s battle with cancer, his charitable efforts, and his profound reflections on Midnight Oil’s legacy underscored his enduring impact on music and social justice causes.

The music world mourns the loss of a legendary figure whose drumming prowess and passionate advocacy will forever resonate in the hearts of fans and fellow musicians.
