“Man in Custody After Driving Wrong Way on Highway 401”

Published:

A 21-year-old man is in custody facing multiple charges following a dangerous incident on Highway 401 in Milton. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) revealed that the man drove in the wrong direction, hitting several cars and eventually crashing into a light post.

The OPP shared dashcam footage of the event on social media, describing it as “shocking.” Sgt. Kerry Schmidt emphasized the unusual nature of the incident, stating, “This is not something you would ever expect to see while driving on the highway.”

The event occurred in the evening on September 7, with the man driving eastbound on the westbound lanes near James Snow Parkway. Mississauga OPP officers apprehended the driver as he tried to flee the scene of the crash.

The released dashcam video captured a dark Honda sedan driving against traffic, narrowly avoiding a vehicle recording the scene. The accused is now facing charges of dangerous driving, failing to stay at the accident site, and driving the wrong way on a divided highway. Authorities are also investigating the possibility of impairment.

Sgt. Schmidt expressed disbelief at the driver’s actions, emphasizing the dangerous nature of driving against traffic on a divided highway. Despite no injuries reported, Schmidt highlighted the potential for tragedy and commended other drivers for their quick actions in avoiding a more severe outcome.

In an interview with CBC Toronto, Schmidt stressed the importance of driver awareness, noting that collisions can occur suddenly and lead to fatal consequences. He urged drivers to stay vigilant as accidents can happen in the blink of an eye.
