Comedian Mae Martin has been announced as the host for the 55th annual Juno Awards by organizers. Martin, who recently hosted the Canadian Screen Awards in 2024 and premiered the Netflix show “Wayward,” will be the first solo comedian to host the ceremony since Russell Peters in 2009. In an interview with CBC News at their Toronto headquarters, Martin expressed excitement about hosting the show in Hamilton on March 29, following their first Juno nomination two years ago for comedy album of the year.
The Junos have had a series of repeat hosts in the past, with Michael Bublé hosting last year for the third time, Nelly Furtado hosting in 2024 for the second time, and Simu Liu hosting the previous year for the second time in a row.
Martin aims to create a relaxed and lively atmosphere for the show, hoping for a vibrant audience experience akin to a live music event. The lineup for the show includes performances by Daniel Caesar and William Prince, with previously announced acts such as Arkells and The Beaches. Additionally, Joni Mitchell will receive a lifetime achievement award, and Nelly Furtado will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
The 2025 Juno Awards were significant in showcasing Canadian pride and distinctiveness in response to external pressures, such as threats of absorption by the United States. Host Michael Bublé emphasized Canada’s uniqueness and refusal to be commodified. Martin’s involvement in the Junos reflects a positive outlook on Canadian art, citing the success of Canadian content like their own Netflix show and the popularity of productions like “Heated Rivalry.”
The upcoming awards will introduce new category changes, including the first Latin music recording of the year award and updated eligibility requirements for rap categories. The event will take place on March 29 at the newly renovated TD Coliseum in Hamilton and will be broadcast live on CBC platforms.
