Bernstein has captured some of the most iconic moments in sports photography history as the primary team photographer for the Lakers, Kings, Clippers, and Dodgers in Los Angeles. Establishing strong relationships with renowned athletes such as Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Kobe Bryant, Bernstein became a trusted observer at major sporting events, including the Dream Team’s triumph at the 1992 Summer Olympics, Michael Jordan’s inaugural NBA championship victory with the Chicago Bulls, and Wayne Gretzky’s historic 802nd goal, surpassing Gordie Howe’s record.
Currently, Bernstein hosts the popular Legend of Sport podcast, mentors aspiring sports photographers, and manages NBA Photos, a global leader in licensing NBA photography that he co-founded forty years ago. In this exclusive interview, he offers insights into some of the most memorable moments in sports history.
‘Where’s Kobe? Where’s the trophy?’
After a team secures a championship win, chaos erupts as everyone rushes onto the court. Amid the frenzy, Bernstein’s task is to locate the star player and the championship trophy. During one such celebration, he found himself on a mission to track down Kobe Bryant and the coveted trophy. In a surreal moment, Bernstein stumbled upon Kobe alone in the back of the locker room, deeply engrossed in his thoughts, unaware of his surroundings.
Kobe and the Grammy road trip
Bernstein recounts a poignant moment during the Grammy road trip in LA, where Kobe Bryant, battling injuries and exhaustion, found solace in a makeshift ice tub. Despite the physical toll, Kobe maintained his focus and determination, with Bernstein capturing an intimate moment of the basketball legend amidst his challenges. Jordan wins 1st championship
Bernstein vividly recalls Michael Jordan’s emotional victory in the 1991 NBA Finals, a pivotal moment that marked the beginning of the Bulls’ dynasty. Amidst the celebration, Bernstein captured a heartfelt scene of Jordan embracing the championship trophy alongside his father, a moment that encapsulated the raw emotions of triumph and family support. Raptors win ’19 NBA title
During the Toronto Raptors’ historic 2019 NBA championship win, Bernstein had the privilege of documenting Kawhi Leonard’s journey from the court to the locker room, capturing intimate moments with his family and teammates.
