Renowned actor Graham Greene, who was nominated for an Oscar, passed away peacefully at the age of 73 in Stratford, Ontario, as confirmed by his manager to CBC News. Gerry Jordan announced the sad news, stating that the legendary Canadian actor from the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario was best known for his roles in films such as “Dances with Wolves” and “The Green Mile.” Greene also appeared in TV shows like “Northern Exposure” and more recently in “Reservation Dogs” and “The Last of Us.”
In an earlier interview with CBC’s Tom Power, Greene shared how he stumbled into acting by chance and fell in love with it despite initially knowing nothing about theatre or scripts. Over his decorated career on stage and screen, Greene garnered numerous accolades, including two Gemini Awards, a Canadian Screen Award, a Grammy Award, and the prestigious Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in 2025.
Fellow actor Tom Jackson fondly remembered Greene as a friend and brother, highlighting their shared experiences working together. Jackson emphasized Greene’s dedication to show business, where he took on various roles behind the scenes to make things happen. Greene’s presence at the 1991 Academy Awards, where he was nominated alongside industry giants, marked a significant milestone in his illustrious career spanning nearly five decades.
Indigenous filmmaker and actor Jennifer Podemski expressed her sorrow at Greene’s passing, describing it as an “epic loss for so many” in a heartfelt social media post. Actor Lou Diamond Phillips also paid tribute to Greene, reminiscing about their friendship and praising Greene’s talent and warm personality. Greene’s manager confirmed that the actor passed away from natural causes, with details about a remembrance celebration to be announced soon.
