“Janeway’s Fourth Floor Move Risks Accreditation Woes”

Published:

In 2019, Memorial University faced a potential loss of accreditation for its pediatric residency program due to concerns raised by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. A recent report indicates that similar risks may resurface if the women’s health unit is relocated to the fourth floor of the Janeway children’s hospital.

The Royal College placed MUN’s pediatric residency program on notice of potential accreditation withdrawal in early 2019. This national organization oversees specialty medical program accreditation in Canada.

Challenges highlighted in the Royal College’s 20-page review report included a lack of physical infrastructure for the program. A subsequent 2025 report by Janeway pediatricians emphasized the importance of addressing deficiencies, particularly in essential learning spaces, call rooms, and clinical teaching areas.

Following the 2019 warning, two additional external reviews were conducted in 2022 and 2024. The outcome of these reviews led to the restoration of full accreditation for MUN’s pediatric residency program in the fall of 2024.

Despite the positive development, concerns persist regarding the potential relocation of women’s health services to the Janeway’s fourth floor. Pediatricians stress that this move could jeopardize the program’s future during the next accreditation review cycle.

The fourth floor of the Janeway is deemed crucial for education and clinical activities, with pediatricians asserting that maintaining proper infrastructure is vital for training within a teaching hospital. The program must adhere to Royal College standards, including providing necessary facilities and services for residents.

Janeway pediatricians caution against any changes that could compromise accreditation standards up to the next review in 2032. They emphasize that preserving the pediatric identity of the Janeway is pivotal for training programs, workforce development, and the overall provincial child health system.
