“Inquest probes overdose death in Windsor detention”

Published:

A relative of a man who passed away from an overdose while detained at the South West Detention Centre in Windsor in 2021 is hopeful for meaningful proposals to emerge from a required inquiry into his demise.

Amy Fitzgerald, identifying herself as Nathaniel Krug’s aunt, inquired during the initial day of the inquest on Monday about enhancing safety within custodial facilities for all individuals, including those on remand.

Krug, aged 21, was discovered unresponsive in his cell, alongside his cellmate, on March 10, 2021, approximately nine days after being relocated to the facility. An autopsy revealed that the cause of death was a fentanyl and etizolam overdose. Etizolam is typically used to treat anxiety, insomnia, or panic disorders.

The inquest, spanning six days, commenced on Monday and will feature testimonies from nine witnesses. Apart from unraveling the events leading to the fatality, the jury might propose measures to avert similar occurrences. Notably, the jury’s role does not involve assigning blame.

Fitzgerald expressed that the inquest delves into the most tragic event their family has faced. She conveyed the profound grief that persists despite over four years passing since Nathaniel’s demise. Krug died just before his son’s premature birth, leaving behind a child with health complications.

Krug, facing attempted murder and firearm charges, had been striving to rectify past missteps through substance abuse treatment, supported by family and anticipating fatherhood. Despite not being convicted, his legacy is marred by the pending crime and the circumstances of his death.

In a poignant twist, video evidence disclosed Krug receiving drugs hidden in a book from another inmate in a neighboring cell, which he then shared with his cellmate. The subsequent medical intervention, including naloxone administration and resuscitation attempts, unfortunately, failed to save Krug.

Dr. Jeffrey Turnbull, an expert witness, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts across correctional facilities to mitigate the impact of opioids and prevent fatalities. While acknowledging the challenges of eradicating opioids from such environments, he underscored the necessity of a comprehensive approach involving staff, management, and inmates to address this persistent issue effectively.
