Researchers at Western University have initiated a study in 2022 to explore alternative ice-melting substances. The study, set to unveil its findings this summer, is evaluating nine different materials for their efficacy in melting road ice across diverse conditions.

Christopher Power, an associate professor involved in the research, emphasized the widespread use of sodium chloride (rock salt) by Ontario municipalities due to its affordability and accessibility. Although rock salt effectively clears ice by lowering water’s freezing point, it poses environmental and infrastructure risks. The corrosive nature of salt accelerates metal degradation on roads, bridges, and vehicles, while its runoff contaminates water bodies like rivers and the Great Lakes.

As rock salt’s effectiveness diminishes at temperatures below -10°C, researchers are exploring alternatives such as sodium acetate and beet juice for de-icing applications. The study at Western University involved field-testing various substances on the campus to assess their melting efficiency and corrosiveness levels. While no definitive superior alternative has been identified yet, the economic factors favoring rock salt’s continued use are acknowledged.

Power suggested a strategic combination of sodium chloride replacements with rock salt in specific areas to mitigate corrosion risks, especially near water bodies and structures. Many municipalities, responding to salt shortages and environmental concerns, are diversifying their de-icing strategies. For instance, the City of London plans to increase plowing frequency and reduce salt application during severe cold spells by incorporating sand-salt mixes for enhanced ice control. This shift towards more sustainable and targeted salt usage reflects a growing trend among local authorities.
