After relocating to Vancouver from Johannesburg in 2018, Caitlyn Moony was initially captivated by the city’s stunning scenery and vibrant atmosphere. However, as time passed, she realized that her expectations didn’t align with reality, leading to a sense of resentment towards Vancouver.
Struggling to establish a network and lacking the coveted “Canadian experience” sought after in job postings, Caitlyn found herself in a demanding admin job at a startup. The long hours and meager pay made it challenging to make ends meet in a basement suite with low ceilings and noisy neighbors.
Feeling isolated and disillusioned, Caitlyn yearned for the sense of community she had experienced in previous locations. With loneliness engulfing her, she finally sought answers on where to find people in Vancouver, only to discover that the city’s residents were likely out hiking in good weather and hibernating indoors during inclement conditions.
The onset of the pandemic heightened Caitlyn’s feelings of isolation, prompting her to leave for London, seeking the bustling city life she craved. However, upon returning to Vancouver after two years, she realized a transformation within herself, embracing the city’s calm and introspective nature.
Despite its imperfections, Caitlyn now sees Vancouver in a new light, acknowledging its quirks and challenges while appreciating the space it provides for personal growth and self-discovery. With a newfound acceptance and understanding, Caitlyn wonders if Vancouver will welcome her back as she returns with a fresh perspective.
Through her journey of self-reflection and evolving perceptions, Caitlyn’s experience highlights the complexities of adapting to a new environment and finding a sense of belonging amidst the ebb and flow of change.
