Ex-MP Criticizes N.W.T. Firefighting, Calls for Federal Aid

Published:

Former Member of Parliament (MP) from the Northwest Territories (N.W.T.) has raised concerns about the territorial government’s firefighting efforts and proposed that the responsibility for fire response in the region should potentially shift to the federal government.

Michael McLeod, who served as MP for a decade and is currently evacuated from Fort Providence due to wildfires, criticized the government’s approach as passive. He emphasized the need for proactive measures, stating that action should have been taken weeks earlier to protect the community with fire retardant.

In a video shared online, McLeod addressed Premier R.J. Simpson at an evacuation center, reiterating his dissatisfaction with the territory’s response strategy. He further advocated for federal intervention in firefighting operations, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

McLeod highlighted the community’s demand for more air tankers despite officials citing poor visibility in recent days. He expressed skepticism towards official statements, pointing out the ongoing efforts of helicopters and commercial jets in the area.

Responding to the concerns, Premier Simpson assured residents of ongoing efforts by fire crews and emergency responders, emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting communities and learning from the current wildfire season to enhance future response programs.

Environment Minister Jay Macdonald defended the government’s response, noting the extensive efforts of emergency crews across the vast affected area. He underscored the challenges posed by natural factors like drought, wind, and smoke, which impact firefighting operations, emphasizing the priority of safety for all personnel involved.

Macdonald asserted the territorial government’s capability and readiness to manage wildfires, stating that while national support is utilized when necessary, the local firefighting program is tailored to address the specific needs and challenges faced by Northwest Territories communities.
