David Lametti Expected to Resign as PM’s Principal Secretary

Published:

Former Justice Minister David Lametti is expected to step down from his role as principal secretary to Prime Minister Mark Carney after a brief tenure, according to sources familiar with the matter. It is rumored that Lametti is being considered for a diplomatic assignment, potentially taking over for Bob Rae, the current ambassador to the United Nations.

Lametti, who previously represented the Montreal riding of LaSalle-Émard-Verdun and served as justice minister in Justin Trudeau’s government until 2023, joined Carney’s team in July. His role as principal secretary is crucial in managing the Prime Minister’s Office’s high-level responsibilities, including overseeing Carney’s political and policy initiatives. Lametti also played a key advisory role during the recent federal election campaign.

He was brought in to replace Tom Pitfield, who was serving in an interim capacity and has yet to depart from the PMO. Five confidential sources spoke to CBC News about Lametti’s impending departure, as they were not authorized to discuss government internal affairs. The PMO declined to comment on the matter.

When questioned about his potential departure and new assignment, Lametti remained tight-lipped, offering no comment. His exit would follow the recent departure of former transport minister Chrystia Freeland from the cabinet.

In a separate development, former defence minister Bill Blair is reportedly set to become the high commissioner to the United Kingdom. Sources also indicate that former energy minister Jonathan Wilkinson is being considered for a diplomatic role in Europe. Both Blair and Wilkinson, who held significant roles in the previous Trudeau administration, were not included in Carney’s cabinet.

The timing of their appointments remains uncertain, with considerations likely tied to political factors such as the upcoming federal budget presentation and crucial parliamentary votes in the minority government scenario.
