“Canadian PM Carney Promises Strong Pressure on Putin Amid Ukraine Conflict”

Published:

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the importance of maintaining strong pressure on Moscow and its allies following threats made by Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding foreign troop deployment in Ukraine. Carney stated that Putin’s reluctance to pursue peace is fueling the conflict and that he will not allow Putin to dictate the terms of peace.

Carney outlined the strategy of allied pressure on Russia, including the imposition of new sanctions, arming Ukrainian forces, and providing support to Ukraine during periods of ceasefire. The next round of sanctions against Russia is currently being prepared by Ukraine’s allies.

According to reports from the Associated Press, Putin declared that any foreign troops entering Ukraine, especially during the ongoing conflict, would be considered legitimate targets by Russian forces. Putin also rejected the idea of peacekeeping forces in Ukraine post a final peace agreement, asserting Moscow’s compliance with treaties.

In a meeting with allies, Carney expressed Canada’s readiness to offer direct and scalable military assistance in a post-ceasefire Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron announced that 26 countries have committed to deploying a reassurance force following a ceasefire or peace deal, with troops being stationed on land, at sea, or in the air.

Earlier this year, Canada pledged $2 billion in military aid to Ukraine, with a focus on acquiring drones, armored vehicles, and other essential munitions. Carney initially announced this funding at the G7 summit and later outlined allocations for urgent supplies, NATO-prioritized items, and various capabilities to support Ukraine’s defense.

During his visit to Kyiv for Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrations, Carney also detailed plans for $31 million in humanitarian aid and reconstruction assistance for the war-affected nation.
