“Canadian Hip-Hop Legend Michie Mee to Be Featured on Official Postage Stamp”

Published:

Canadian hip-hop icon, Michie Mee, is ecstatic after receiving news from Canada Post about being featured on an upcoming official postage stamp. The rapper, renowned as the godmother of Canadian rap, expressed her disbelief and overwhelming joy upon hearing the news during an interview with As It Happens host Nil Kӧksal.

Set to grace one of three stamps dedicated to Canadian hip-hop trailblazers for Black History Month in February, Michie Mee will be honored alongside Toronto rapper and producer Maestro Fresh Wes, and Quebec trio Muzion. Canada Post highlighted Michie Mee’s influence on the genre, noting her pioneering use of Jamaican patois in her rhymes.

This marks the first time that Canada Post is releasing stamps featuring hip-hop artists, with the Crown corporation traditionally issuing stamps for Black History Month since 2009. Michie Mee, whose real name is Michelle Ann Camille McCullock, emphasized the importance of recognition for women in rap, especially Canadian artists, reflecting on the challenges faced during her career’s early days in a music industry that often overlooked Canadian talent.

The unveiling of the hip-hop stamps is scheduled for a private event at The Concert Hall in Toronto on Jan. 27, with public availability slated for February. Michie Mee expressed gratitude for the honor, acknowledging the significance of receiving a stamp while embracing her identity and legacy. She also shared words of wisdom for aspiring Canadian artists, emphasizing the importance of financial responsibility, self-belief, and enjoying the journey in pursuing their dreams.
