Toronto Blue Jays newcomer Trey Yesavage, who kicked off the 2025 season in the lower minor leagues, is set to take the mound for Game 2 of the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees. Manager John Schneider revealed this decision ahead of the series opener, with Yesavage scheduled to face off against Yankees left-hander Max Fried on Sunday.
Expressing his excitement, Yesavage described his reaction to the news as “beyond floored” and “awesome.” The 22-year-old was the 20th overall pick by Toronto in last year’s amateur draft. He swiftly progressed through four minor league levels this season before joining the Blue Jays, where he achieved a 1-0 record in three starts in September.
Reflecting on his journey, Yesavage stated, “I’ve been part of five teams this year and met many individuals within the organization. However, being in this position now, I couldn’t have imagined it any better.”
Despite not surpassing five innings in any of his Toronto appearances, Yesavage managed to set a Blue Jays record by striking out nine Rays batters in his Major League Baseball debut. While facing Tampa Bay twice and Kansas City once, he is yet to pitch against the Yankees.
New York manager Aaron Boone acknowledged Yesavage’s talent, particularly praising his exceptional split-finger fastball. George Springer, a Blue Jays outfielder, commended Yesavage’s composure as a rookie, highlighting his maturity and calm demeanor on the field.
Looking ahead, right-hander Shane Bieber, the 2020 AL Cy Young awardee with Cleveland, is slated to start Game 3 at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, as confirmed by Schneider. Carlos Rodon is anticipated to be the starting pitcher for the Yankees in that game.
Schneider explained that the decision to start Yesavage at home and Bieber on the road was strategic, aiming to keep Yesavage available for subsequent series matchups in various roles as needed.
