“Blue Jays Designate Alek Manoah to Make Room for Santander”

Published:

The Toronto Blue Jays made a surprising move by designating Alek Manoah for assignment to clear roster space for the return of veteran Anthony Santander. General manager Ross Atkins explained the decision during Toronto’s recent game against the Boston Red Sox, citing the need for roster depth and support as the team enters a crucial phase.

Manoah, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2024, has not played this season. The 27-year-old pitcher boasts a career record of 29-20 with a 3.34 ERA and 412 strikeouts over four seasons, but his 2024 season was cut short due to injury.

In 2021, Manoah impressed with a 9-2 record and a 3.22 ERA, finishing eighth in the rookie of the year voting. The following year, he achieved a 16-7 record, a 2.24 ERA, and 180 strikeouts, earning himself an All-Star nod and finishing third in Cy Young Award voting.

However, his performance dipped in 2023 with a 3-9 record and a 5.87 ERA before his abbreviated 2024 season. Despite his contributions to the team, the Blue Jays decided to part ways with Manoah.

Manager John Schneider praised Manoah’s efforts and resilience in his post-game remarks. Manoah will now be subject to waivers, and if unclaimed, he can opt for free agency. Although he showed promise in his rehab starts with the Buffalo Bisons, Toronto’s focus is on clinching the division title and securing home-field advantage in the postseason.

Atkins emphasized that the decision was not due to any specific shortcomings in Manoah’s rehabilitation but rather a strategic move to prioritize immediate support from other players on the roster.
