Activists engaged in a flotilla endeavoring to challenge the Israeli blockade of Gaza reported on Wednesday that some of their boats sustained damage from drones while sailing south of Greece overnight. The Global Sumud Flotilla stated that they were targeted during the night by drones and faced communications interference. They reported hearing at least 13 explosions near several flotilla boats, with drones or aircraft dropping unspecified objects on around 10 boats. Despite no casualties, the vessels suffered damage, and there were communication disruptions.
A video shared on the flotilla’s social media depicted what seemed to be an explosion near one of the vessels. Greece’s Coast Guard did not receive any distress signals. The foreign ministry reiterated an offer for the flotilla to unload humanitarian aid in an Israeli port for transport to Gaza or face repercussions. The ministry emphasized that Israel would not permit vessels to enter a combat zone or breach the naval blockade lawfully imposed.
Italy condemned the attack and deployed a navy frigate for potential rescue operations. The Italian Navy’s frigate Fasan was en route to the area north of Crete. The European Union cautioned against the use of force, highlighting the need to uphold freedom of navigation under international law. The UN Human Rights Office called for an independent investigation into the reported drone attacks and harassment against the flotilla.
Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, aboard one of the flotilla boats, labeled the strikes a “scare tactic” and urged supporters to focus on Gaza’s plight. Italian activist Simone Zambrin reported drones causing damage to the boats and crew members. The flotilla, featuring boats from various countries, is carrying symbolic humanitarian aid for Gaza.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry accused the organizers of links to Hamas and proposed unloading aid in an Israeli port. Several attacks have been reported since the flotilla departed from Spain, aiming to challenge the 18-year Israeli blockade of Gaza. The ongoing war in Gaza has resulted in significant casualties, with international concerns rising over the humanitarian situation.
